RE: PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident
Dear PowerSchool User or Parent / Guardian of User,
Wahpeton Public Schools has been notified of a cybersecurity incident involving our PowerSchool Student Information System on or around December 28, 2024. The District was first notified by PowerSchool that we were not involved in this PowerSchool data breach. We have since learned the Wahpeton Public School District is included in this PowerSchool data breach.
PowerSchool has begun contacting affected individuals via email with the subject “PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident.” You may have received this email as early as March 7, 2025. The email contains the name of the individual affected by the breach.
The data breach impacted current and former students, parents/guardians, and staff members. Exposed date may include Names, Contact Information, Date of Birth, Social Security Number, Limited Medical Alert Details, and other related information. According to PowerSchool: “At this time, we do not have evidence that the named individual’s Social Security Number was involved. At this time, we do not have evidence that limited medical alert information for the named individual was involved.”

Moving forward, PowerSchool is offering complimentary identify protection services for involved individuals, regardless of whether an individual's Social Security Number was compromised.

This data breach was outside of the control of the Wahpeton School District. The PowerSchool software company experienced the data breach on their internal systems. The Wahpeton School District, North Dakota Information Technology Department, and PowerSchool, have taken several steps to mitigate future data breaches. We take this PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident seriously. Wahpeton Public School District advises all students and employees associated with the District since 2007 or those recorded in PowerSchool to enroll in identify protection services as detailed above.
